SEPTEMBER ROUGH-STUFF CAMPING IN MID-WALES.

After weeks of bad weather the Brothers decided to head out into the Cambrian Mountains of Mid Wales for a mid week camping trip. An 11 o'clock start from Croesyceiliog was planned and went according to schedule. Arrival in Llanwrthwl at 13:00 where we were to get the bikes ready for the off! The ride to Elan village was an unusual one taking us through gated lanes and an impressive marshy plain. Our objective was cycle/drag/push our fully loaded bikes to the 2000ft peak of Drygarn Fawr. Climbed by us four times previously, this cairn-topped mythical mountain had to be climbed at least once a year! This time the route was the gradual eastern approach not taken before by the Brothers. The ride through Elan village was like passing through a film set with its toy town like houses. The Brothers went past the mighty Caban Coch reservoir then turned up a rough remote farm track that ascends the path toward the summit. It was confusing coming this way but we after an hour of dragging, the glory of the two cairns of Drygarn came to view, better than seeing a Van Gough at Cardiff Museum, a true masterpiece! The weather was dry and the late afternoon sun blazed down. It was a relatively easy drag up to the cairns and were again not disappointed at the wondrous view beheld by us. The wind, however, was unforgiving so a sheltered camping spot was found just below the trig-point. The last blaze of the sun saw an excellent feast for the famous ‘Eat’ brothers. Nic cooked lamb and chicken kebabs while I dined peppered grill steaks and venison burgers.
