ROUGH-STUFF CAMPING IN WILD MID-WALES - Day 2

During the night it must have the worst weather we have encountered whilst camping, at one point I thought the tent was going to be ripped apart by the torrential rain. However, these little Jack Wolfskin tents did an excellent job in repelling the weather, for less than £80 they are very good value for money. Shelter was sought in our tents for a while in the morning from the waves of rain but after a quick coffee the forestry road was taken back to the top of the Tywi valley. The ride on the asphalt track alongside the massive lake of the Lyn Brianne is interesting and picturesque, strewn with purple heather that we had not cycled on for quite a while. It is no wonder that our late Uncle Ron enjoyed this valley so much before it was dammed and also after it was turned into a reservoir. The rain eased off around 2 o'clock a spot of lunch was taken and then from Rhandir Mwyn an ancient road was found toward Cynghordy. Here the viaduct that carries the heart of Wales railway line was sighted. The climb into the Fwng Uchaf forest starts at 50 metres above sea level to rise to 520 metres. The path is unusual for this area as it is quite narrow passing through indigenous trees to arrive at the remote abandoned Fwng Uchaf farm. From here there is a beautiful climb through the pine trees to the top, a fantastic view of all the mountains around is the reward for climbing up here. The sun had now broken through and it was quite warm in the late afternoon. Carrying on along this track there is a magic link to the road to Llanwrtyd Wells. The Brothers arrived back at the car park, our equipment was soaked but we had enjoyed it immensely after all.... it's all part of cycling!
