NEW YEAR RUN INTO THE CAMBRIAN MOUNTAINS - Day 202.01.11
After an excellent night's sleep and a hearty breakfast we cycled out toward the ancient Strata Florida Abbey and then followed the forest track up to the massive forest strewn Cnwc mountain plateau. A spectacular scenic ride through the heart of the Cambrians it roughly follows the route of the 'Monks trod', an ancient route which can be seen from the forest track, this rough road eventually makes its way to Abbey Cwm Hir near Rhayader. One track heads off to the source of the Twyi but we turned off down the track over the Hirnant river and then climbing to the 540 metre summit. The asphalt road was met north of Dolgoch and from here the pleasant road along east side of the Lyn Brianne was a enjoyable route. The lake waters had frozen and were covered with snow making a strange sight. The ride up to the peak of Cefn Coch 500 metres was taken in the last hour of daylight and following Nick's Garmin GPS made sure that no wrong turns were made. The lamps were lit. The descent was very icy and had to be taken with care. After what had seemed an age we eventually dropped down to Abergwesyn and then a fast sprint back to Llanwrtyd Wells.
