NEW YEAR RUN INTO THE CAMBRIAN MOUNTAINS - Day 1

New Year's Day had arrived and a trip into the Cambrian mountains had been planned to start the year off. Leaving Llanwrtyd Wells mid morning saw us climbing up the forest track over Mynydd Trawsnant at 517 metres. Over the top we cycled through the mist and the remnants of the snow on the path. Descending down out of the mist there were good views of the Twyi valley and the Llyn Brianne dam where we stopped for some lunch. The forest road on the west side of the reservoir had gone very rough in the wet weather ,however it turned out to be relatively quite smooth as we climbed over to the Sor-y-Mynydd chapel at the far end of the lake, which was partially frozen here. Sunset approached, the lamps were lit, and the ride took us up a long climb past the Lyn Berwyn. Thankfully there was then a six mile descent into Tregaron where supplies were sought from the Spar shop. This time The Brothers had decided to stop at the Black Lion Inn in Pontrhydfendigaid. Arriving there at 19.00 we were shown to our excellent rooms - total luxury compared with our usual camping stops! This pub is about three hundred years old and has a large Cycle Touring Club emblem on the side put there in 1900. The chef had gone home early though, there were other pubs in the village, but we ate a small snack in our rooms.
