WHITECASTLE FOR LUNCH

Sunday morning 08:00, the bad weather had stopped briefly for Father's day. The road to New Inn was quiet, as was the wood shaded lane through Monkswood. Provisions were bought in Usk and a splendid ride was enjoyed to Llandenny and then on to Raglan. The Brothers tasted the champagne air of the golden lanes of north Gwent, through leafy paths to the cider orchards near Llantilio Croessenny. From here the road to Treadam was taken but the rough Offas Dyke path toward Whitecastle had been turned into a muddy track. Before long we were at the castle chatting to the friendly curator Margaret and Mike, the retired castle stonemason. Today there were Long bowmen here displaying their mediaeval skills. After taking in some brunch, a fast ride was enjoyed back through Llanarth along the main road to Chainbridge and then up a short climb to the top of Rumble street. The excellent ride was finished off by retracing our steps through Monkswood and along the old abandoned road from New Inn to Croesyceiliog....42 miles.
