TO ORGANY POOL IN THE RAIN

The weather was unsettled as The Brothers left Ashford Hall at 07:00 on Sunday. The ride followed the lanes along the Trehebert Road and then over to Newbridge-on-Usk. Waterproof jackets were donned as the showers started and shelter was taken from a thunderstorm on the ascent up Llewellyn's Dingle. As the weather eased the path to Llangwm was taken. There then followed an enjoyable but humid climb up to Cobbler's Plain. The road from here took us on the roller coaster ride to Trellech Grange and the 'hinterland' of the upper world of the Catbrook plateau beckoned. The dark tunnel of trees took us up to the quiet, enchanted,  Organy Pool which stands 271 metres above the Wye valley. Although warm, it was probably the first time we had encountered wet weather here, usually this was a rest spot in the sun. Pies were eaten and a ride through the sometimes creepy lanes to the main Trellech  to Chepstow road was taken. It became increasingly warm and humid by the time the descent to Usk was over. The Brothers stopped in Usk for a while which was quite busy with the famous 'Usk-Walkers' who were  trying to find a shop open, completely in vain on a Sunday! Our 'traditional' route home was cycled via Prescoed, Coed-y-Paen and back along the Trehebert road, here I punctured and had to walk the last few hundred metres to the gate....57km, 1169 m ascent.
